SEO Is Mostly Title Plus Description With Content
SEO just like almost anything else in the universe is subject to Pareto’s Principle, meaning 80% of the effect can be achieved from 20% of the work. Surprisingly most site’s have not mastered the basic 20% of SEO that consists of having unique titles, descriptions, and content.
Make sure your blog or website has all three, WordPress offers several nice plugins for injecting descriptions into each post, our favorite is All In One SEO Pack. Ensuring each post has a title, description, and targeted content will drastically improve each articles reach.

Paul – I disagree with you on this one. The on-site factors are definitely covered by the 80/20 rule, but that's only 15% of the SEO equation according to SEOmoz.org. Your linkbuilding is going to be 65% of your rankings. Although I agree that people should definitely get the titles/descriptions/content done, because linking plays a more significant part of ranking, there may be additional things that site owners should do off the bat.
AJ,
Agreed, I should have caveated the statement with “on the content side”. SEO is made up of two things, content and links. The above rule stands true for content, I hope you agree with me there?
As far as links, well thats a whole different ball game. Some say good content brings good links, I tend to agree. Ironically the 65% is why we built Arkayne, it helps you do the link part.
Thats a future article…
Paul, I think that you've got good points, but “good” unique content is critical also. The “May Day” update at Google increases the requirement for your site to have good content writing in order to show up for long-tail queries. There are some strategies surrounding what you write and how it's written that can greatly impact (both positive & negative) your results.
This is something that we've been very successful w/ over the years – in fact, we have yet to see a client impacted by the recent algo update.
